KAMCHATKA VISITOR SURVEY:
A Presentation of Preliminary Results

March 26, 2008, a presentation of a preliminary report on Kamchatka Visitor Survey Program was held in the cultural centre of the Krasheninnikov Regional Library.
This international program is administered by UNDP/GEF Project “Kamchatka Biodiversity Conservation” in cooperation with the Regional Administration Agency for Tourism and international partners U.S. Forest Service, Universities of Northern Arizona and Alaska.
The main goal of the study is to provide all the stakeholders in ecotourism and tourism development with demographic, marketing and economic data on visitors and with information about the use of Kamchatka’s natural resources for tourist needs.
The Program duration is one year beginning from July 15, 2007 up to July 14, 2008. The survey is held in the check-in area of Elizovo airport. A specially trained team composed of local students asks passengers from certain flights to fill a questionnaire containing about 40 questions. The questionnaire for the survey was devised based on an analysis of information needs from various Kamchatka’s agencies engaged in resource management and tourism development.
The Visitor Survey team inputs data from filled questionnaires into a computer database. 2,500 questionnaires have been processed to date.
The preliminary analysis of the collected data was presented by Professor of North Arizona University David Ostergren last Wednesday. Officers from Kamchatka protected areas, representatives of Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for Nature Use Control), tour operators, university professors and students attended this presentation. The final report and analysis of data collected by the Kamchatka Visitor Survey Program will be presented to the public via presentations, workshops and publications in the late September of this year.
